Guiding the Growing Mind: Support for Autistic Teens
Supporting an autistic teen means understanding their unique needs as they navigate a world that often feels overwhelming. This course provides practical, compassionate guidance across the key areas of daily life where support makes the biggest impact. From building trust and structure at home to helping your teen succeed at school or transition confidently into further education, each module is designed to empower both young people and their families. You’ll also explore how to support your teen in public settings, manage sensory and social challenges, and foster safe, positive engagement with social media. With tools for communication, self-advocacy, and emotional wellbeing, this course helps autistic teens build confidence and thrive on their own terms.
At Home: Supporting Growth and Emotional Regulation
The teenage years bring new challenges—and opportunities—for autistic teens and their families. This module focuses on helping parents and carers support their teen at home by creating calm, structured routines, improving communication, and fostering emotional regulation. You’ll learn how to balance growing independence with the need for predictability, while nurturing your teen’s self-esteem and helping them feel truly understood within the safety of home.
At School: Advocacy, Inclusion, and Academic Support
For many autistic teens, school can be a source of stress and misunderstanding. In this module, we’ll explore how to effectively advocate for your teen’s needs, from accessing support plans (such as EHCPs or IEPs) to working with teachers on communication and social challenges. You’ll gain tools to help your teen navigate the academic workload, manage peer relationships, and feel included and respected in their school environment.
In Further Education: Transitioning with Confidence
Transitioning to college, sixth form, or university can be overwhelming for autistic teens—but with the right support, it can also be empowering. This module guides families and young people through preparing for change, accessing disability services, building independent living skills, and supporting mental health. With a focus on fostering autonomy, you’ll help your teen move into further education with the confidence and strategies they need to thrive.
In Public Places: Building Comfort and Coping Strategies
Social and sensory environments outside the home can be especially challenging for autistic teens. This module equips you and your teen with strategies to prepare for, manage, and recover from outings such as public transport, shopping centres, restaurants, or group events. You’ll learn how to support sensory needs, navigate social interactions, and reduce anxiety—helping your teen feel more confident and in control in public spaces.
On Social Media: Encouraging Safe and Positive Use
Social media is a major part of teen life—and for autistic teens, it can offer both opportunities for connection and risks of misunderstanding or overwhelm. This module helps you guide your teen in building digital awareness, managing screen time, and staying safe online. You’ll learn how to support healthy communication, set boundaries, and empower your teen to engage with social platforms in ways that feel meaningful, safe, and authentic.
